Website http://co-opa.com Jan/Feb2017, Vol. 17, Issue 1 President's Message: We certainly have not much of a chance to do any flying lately. Even our meetings have been having a bad winter. The snow is melting so we can start to get back on track. Come discuss the winter past, and chat about better days past and future for flying, at our February CO-OPA meeting this Third Thursday. February 16 for those of you without a handy calendar. The usual applies. All fellow aviators, come on in the Professional Air waiting room at KBDN. Come on in at 6pm, we will do potluck at 6:30pm, and finish up with a short formal meeting at 7pm. Hope to see you all there, should be warm and dry inside! Once again the weather for our Fly-Out is not good. Weather.gov forecasts a chance of snow Saturday morning. Intellicast thinks maybe an inch with clearing by noon. We’ll be pulling another Drive-In for this month’s destination. With luck maybe we can do some pattern work in the afternoon. Calendar: 16 February – Monthly Meeting 18 February – Monthly Fly-out 16 March – Monthly Meeting 18 March – Monthly Fly-out 20 April – Monthly Meeting 22 April – Monthly Fly-out Bend Pattern Change: The new KBDN traffic pattern is in effect. Permanently, or at least for a long time. Here are the relevant NOTAMS: MMV 11/092 BDN RWY 16 FIXED WING RIGHT TFC PATTERN 1612011600-PERM !MMV 11/091 BDN RWY 34 HEL RIGHT TFC PATTERN 1612011600-PERM !MMV 11/090 BDN RWY 16 HEL LEFT TFC PATTERN 1612011600-PERM Clear as mud, right? But actually there is a simple way to think of it. The helicopter traffic pattern is always on the East side of the airport. The fixed wing traffic pattern is always on the West side of the airport. For us airplanes the only change is that runway 16 is now right traffic. Except that many will not have gotten the message, or do a mid-field crossover, or just be lazy. So announce early, announce often, and keep your heads on a swivel. I do notice one last minute scary change in the new pattern. Helicopters can now cross midfield, under the fixed wing traffic. This could create quite a surprise for a fixed wing aircraft going around on the runway… See page 2 for an image of the new pattern as shown in the new Fly Friendly brochure.
