Website http://co-opa.com March 2024, Vol. 24, Issue 1 President's Message: After canceling two monthly meetings due to dangerous icing conditions, Spring is almost here, and we can toast to it at our April meeting on the 21st. the Third Thursday of the month, Head on over to the Bend Builders Assist hanger, 63030 Powell Butte Road, on the south west corner of KBDN, at 6pm. Bring your own dinner, and we’ll eat right away before food get cold. As always, many thanks go out to Mike Robertson, and Mike Wissing, for letting us use their space. Our fly out director, Ken Fayal told me he tore his hamstring, ACL and LCL. Surgeries are scheduled, so Ken will not be leading anything this month. The weather looks to be glorious, some hopefully some flying happens. ZSE, DSD, KRDM: Our local airspace, the area around Deschutes VOR (DSD), Redmond Airport (KRDM) and Bend Airport (KBDN), is increasingly worrying our good friends at the air traffic control center in Seattle (ZSE). In the entire ZSE region 80% of the TCAS Resolution Advisories (RAs), are now here. ZSE staff shared with me some very scary radar playbacks. Be sure to always listen on 126.15 when you are within about 30 miles of KRDM. Then, and only then, squawk 1237, to let ZSE know you are listening. That lets them know they can call you in the blind if they see an upcoming conflict. Instead of flying through the KRDM approach and departure corridors, consider flying directly over the KRDM Class D airspace. Unless you want to hit a 737... Plans are underway to create a Central Oregon Approach sector, but we know how quickly the FAA moves, and that will be after the KBDN Control Tower goes in service. Proposed Rules and Regulations Much has happened since the last newsletter on the proposed Rules and Regulations (R&R) for KBDN. And yet, nothing has happened. City Staff saw the large number of comments on their proposal, and then met with people from Friends of Bend Airport (FoBA) to discuss the many problems with the proposal, and the way forward. At that time Staff promised to present a red line R&R document to FoBA by the end of February. We are all still waiting. At the same time, the Prineville Airport sends us thanks for all the business Bend is sending their way. FoBA has compiled a lengthy document organizing they myriad problems with the R&R, that, and other material is on their website: https://friendsofbendairport.com/ Calendar: 21 March – Monthly Meeting 23 March – Monthly Fly-out? 18 April – Monthly Meeting 20 April – Monthly Fly-out 18 May – Monthly Meeting 20 May – Monthly Fly-out Oooops: I had a brain fart, and let a domain squatter get control of co-opa.com.
