Website: http://co-opa.com April 2014, Vol. 4, Issue 14 President's Message: Taxes done, or at least extensions filed, so time to relax with your fellow pilots. Come on down for the monthly CO-OPA meeting Let us meet at the KBDN Flight services building at 6pm for bold tales of flying, enjoy our infamous potluck at 6:30pm and have a short formal meeting at 7pm. The current weather forecast for our fly-out has deteriorated a bit. The current forecast is 20% chance of rain after 11am, winds 13 to 18mph, gusts to 29mph. A warm then cold front should be overhead Saturday morning. If the forecast improves we might make Christmas Valley, otherwise we need to pick a breakfast spot in Bend. Come to our meeting and help us noodle our options. News tidbit: Rumour has it that Wings and Wheels has been kicked out of Sunriver. It may reappear, in altered form, sometime this summer at Bend Airport. No, that is not the sound of a bad landing, it is an acronym for Western Antique Aviation and Automobile Museum. Conveniently located on Ken Jernstedt Airfield (4S2). 4S2 is more commonly known as Hood River Airport and I don't recall anyone calling it Jernstedt on the CTAF. The usual suspects, Mike and Ann Bond in their Cardinal 23Q, and Gary Miller with Don Wilfong and Maxwell in 57R braved the early morning (10am) for the 96nm trip. Only a few thin high clouds marred the perfect blue sky. Not a breath of wind, and narry a bump. Mount Hood looked wonderful as we passed by, it could have used a bit more snow. Mount Adams came into view as we made the steep descent into the East Fork of the Hood River from Blue Box Pass. I find that to avoid the need to circle down it is best for me to be at pattern power with gear and ten degrees of flaps as I cross the Pass. Then I can dive down the canyon, staying to the north side. As I pass the fork of the river I'm right on the 45 for runway 25 at the right altitude, speed and configuration. And hungry. So we trekked to the north end of 25, crossed the road, and headed into the Twin Peaks Drive-In. The place is under new management and getting even better reviews than before. I recommend the clam strips. No longer hungry, next stop was the WAAAM just north of the north ramp where we had parked. OPA President Mary Rosenblum even showed up in her RV-4 to join us. There seemed to be more docents than visitors and they were all eager to show off their collection. Even the Chief Pilot came by for a while and took us behind the ropes. Always something new to see. More hanger space was added behind the old Evergreen hanger doors to house the expanding collection. That now includes a number of vintage european gliders. So, all up, a great flyout.
