Website: http://co-opa.com April 2015, Vol. 15, Issue 4 President's Message: Wow, the weather is so great time has flown by. But that calendar shows us the Third Thursday is almost here. And being the day AFTER tax day no excuses to not attend. So as always, drive, fly, walk, bike or kayak to the KBDN Flight Services Building this Thursday, the Third Tuesday, 16 April 2015, around 6pm. Pot luck at 6:30pm, and the usual 'formal' meeting at 7pm. The weather just keeps getting better and better, plus a lot to gossip about. Be there or be square. Calendar: 16 April – Monthly Meeting 18 April – Monthly Fly-out 21 May – Monthly Meeting 23 May – Monthly Fly-out 18 June – Monthly Meeting 20 June – Monthly Fly-out 16 July – Monthly Meeting 18 July – Monthly Fly-out My Inbox: Madras (S33) runway 16/34 is now closed until May 15th. Progress has been good, so cross your fingers it may open early. Runway 04/22 will stay open. Call the FBO for updates: 541-475-4899. The bad news about Butler Aircraft on Redmond Field (KRDM) continues to be grim. Butler started canceling flight instruction at the start of April. The City of Redmond has a job opening for an FBO manager on their web site. I wonder why? In better news, Russ Ward has been appointed Chief Airplane Instructor at Leading Edge. Not to be outdone, Professional Air has appointed Brad Payne as their new Chief Flight Instructor. Redmond Airport (KRDM) plans to close for all fixed wing traffic, on all runways, from 2 May 2016 to 22 May 2016. Late Breaking News: Z21 and the Bend Bulletin report Deschutes County has applications for two 100 acre solar energy farms near Big Sky Park. That puts them less than 7,000 feet from the turn from downwind to base on Runway 34. There is some concern that the glare from the solar panels in the morning could be hazardous. The FAA is soon to release rules requiring a Glare Study, but these projects have not done any such study. They may manage to get approval before the new requirements take effect. The deadline for comments to the county is April 24. March Fly-out: Great weather, again, for our monthly fly-out. This time to Chiloquin (2S7). Easy to find, just head south on Highway 97 for 96 nm. Land when the Klamath Marsh is on your 3 o'clock and you see the Sprague River next to the Highway. Melita's Cafe is a short, but sometimes scary, walk across the highway. The place started as a gas station, probably just after World War II. Various upgrades have happened over the years. Not only is the Cafe a nice place for a pilot to refuel himself, it is also good for long walks in adjacent USFS land under the lodge poll pines. April should also be great, come join us.
