Being a hungry and dangerous crowd our first stop was the Twin Peaks Drive-In just past the west end of the runway. By all accounts the food was good and cheap, as all $100 breakfasts should be. Once the inner beast had been tamed we headed to the always fascinating Western Antique Automobile and Aircraft Museum (WAAAM) to check for new, or newly appreciated exhibits. My INBOX: Phase 2 of the West Taxiway project should be done in the next week or two. That will complete the work from the gas pumps to the north. Then work will move to the south end. Kent Couch is at it again. The current plan is to depart Bend at 10am on July 14 to lawn-chair fly all the way to Montana. Hoping to set the World Record for the longest two man cluster balloon flight. Let's all wish him luck! Random Thoughts: My charge last month was to seek out the best aviation movies out there and make a top ten list. A bigger task than I thought, and more controversial than I expected. For example, the Navy officially hated Top Gun when it came out, and yet it has a lot of cool footage of real fighters flying. Another fondly remembered movie, Tora, Tora, Tora has only a few short shots of T-6s, in level flight, pretending to be zeros. So does not make the cut. To make things harder, a lot of the ones I wanted to check out are not available on Netflix. So, as a work in progress, in no alphabetical order, I offer up: Bridges of Toko Ri Dawn Patrol Final Countdown Midway Spirit of St. Louis Strategic Air Command Top Gun The Battle of Britain The Memphis Belle The Right Stuff Newsletter Inputs: Send your newsletter tidbits to: gem@rellim.com
