Website http://co-opa.com July 2022, Vol. 22, Issue 7 President's Message: Summer finally came, and not as brutal as last year (yet). Come to our CO-OPA Monthly Meeting on the 21st of July,, the usual Third Thursday of the month, and share your summer exploits. We’ll gather in the Bend Builders Assist hanger, 63030 Powell Butte Road, on the south west corner of KBDN, at 6pm. Bring your own dinner, and we’ll eat right away before food get cold. As always, many thanks go out to Mike Robertson, and Mike Wissing, for letting us use their space. The forecast for out Fly-out on Saturday looks pretty good. Sunny, high 90F, winds 10 to 15 mph. Similar, and cooler, in SLE and ONP. We could go to the beach, the mountains, or? Runway Closures: The KBDN runway will closed from about the 7th of September to the 16th. Weather permitting, barring unforseen events, etc. That means if you want to fly to the WAAAM Fly-in (highly recommended!) then you will need to move to someplace like Prineville (S39) on Labor Day weekend. There will be a second, shorter, closure in October to finish the job. The Troudale (KTTD) runway will be closed from July 11th to the 22nd. On reopening there will be many changes to the runway, taxiways, lighting, signage, markings, etc. Study the new airport diagram the next time you head to KTTD. Fly-out: The weather goddess was fickle in June. There was a weird northerly wind flow for weeks that confounded the computer models and us. Leading to the wettest April, May and June ever in the Pacific North West (PNW). There were rays of hope, but come Fly-out day, we met at Bend Builders Assist for a final weather check. Looking straight up, nice and blue, with light winds. But all quadrants had ugly low clouds and virga. Even toward our, hoped for, easy destination of Christmas Valley (62S). The classic “Bend Blue Bowl”. Leading to the question: was the situation going to get better or worse? The experiences of the previous month clearly led to the answer of “Yes”. In the end, we punted and had a fine breakfast at CJ’s at the Airport. Later, weather radar showed thunderstorms appearing over 62S. We were happier to be on the ground in Bend, wishing we were up there, than stuck on 62S, or worse, in a thunderstorm.
