Website: http://co-opa.com August 2012, Vol. 12, Issue 8 President's Message: Sunriver and Prineville both had great fly-ins last month. Congrats and thanks to all the volunteers that made it all happen. Of special note the EAA flew 87 Young Eagles at Sunriver. Ogie Shaw will be our speaker for this months CO-OPA meeting. Ogie will drive down from Beaverton for us. The topic will be, "Fitting Fitness into Your Schedule for Health and Safety". It will cover health problems related to poor exercise and nutrition habits that can affect safe flying. His talks have been well reviewed so I'm looking forward to the presentation. So, as usual, let's meet at 6pm at the KBDN Flight Services Building for the usual tall tales, followed by our famous pot luck at 6:30pm. Then we'll have a short business meeting at 7pm followed by Ogie's talk. I expect the runway to look new again. Sadly there will be no further maintenance on the old ramp areas as the state has already classified them as 'failed'. The good news about the 'failure' is maybe some FAA money will be available to 'unfail' the ramp. In other news we have this update on the taxiway A project: The schedule to this point is on track and nothing has slowed progress in Phase 3. Rock excavation lasted a few weeks, but this was expected. As noted above, Phase 3 is expected to close out this Friday morning (8-17-2012). Areas open for services until Phase 4 will be from A-6 all the way through to south of connector A-3. After 8-17-2012, A-3 down to A-1 will be closed to fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, with the exception of A-2. This connector will be open only to helicopters to taxi onto the runway or to taxiway B. All other areas North of A-3 will be open for service for all aircraft during Phase 4. This Thursday, JRS will spray a black prime coat atop the rock surface for Phase 3. THIS WILL NOT BE PAVED, it’s designed to keep dust down when helicopters pass over and keeps the rock in place until paving occurs. Phase 4 will be just like the other phases, but the smallest and most confined, about 700’ of construction here. There will be several days of rock excavation to start and JRS will do their best to haul off material once or twice a week to keep stock piles to a minimum. Phase 4 should last through the second week of September. Keep in mind that Phase 3 and 4 will be paved together to reduce the number of seems and a better overall product, this will occur in the third week of September. Thank you for your patience and understanding during construction, there is a lot going on out there and everyone is working together to make reconstruction of Taxiway A successful. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please call me @ 541-410-8610 or you can call or stop by the Airport Managers office. Thank You, Rick Jacobs, WHPacific July Flyout: As always, July is a great month to fly in Central Oregon. Warm but not too hot, and the smoke from fires has not built up yet. For our July Fly-out we headed to the always fun Prospect Fly-in at Prospect State Airport (S64). The annual event is a two day fund raiser for the Jackson County Search and Rescue unit based in Prospect. Five planes headed out from Bend so we made a commanding presence. Sadly fog in the Willamette Valley cut total attendance this year, but it also meant no craziness in the pattern like we have seen before. Nothing beats catered camping and we were catered to for Saturday lunch, a Steak Dinner Saturday night and a pancake breakfast Sunday morning. The downside was the mosquitos also had healthy meals from our blood. I had welts for two weeks since I forgot my Deet. Many thanks to Ed Endsley for the photos on the next page.
