President's Message:

Grr, smoke here and there, and occasionally everywhere. Visibility
sometimes down to under three miles. Even the ducks are IFR. Come
join us at our July meeting to swap fire tales. We meet in the KBDN
Flight Services Building this Thursday, the Third Thursday, 16 July
2015, around 6pm. Pot luck at 6:30pm, and the usual 'formal' meeting at
7pm.

With luck we may be able to plan a fly-out that avoids the smoke and
TFR's.

And don't forget about the the Airshow of the Cascades on Friday
night and Saturday the 28th and 29th of August. Manfred Radius in his
glider, Greg Colyer in his T-33 jet, Justin Homan on his morotcycles,
and a whole lot more.

Random Thoughts:

If you are, like I am, an AOPA member, then you received an email
from them about the new AOPA Go app. This replaces their previous FlyQ
app, which in turn replaced their Palm app.

Seeing that the app if free, after paying my annual dues, I grabbed a
copy from the Google Play Store. The app is also available for iOS.

Finally AOPA partnered with someone that should know a bit about
aviation software: Jeppesen. Which makes AOPA Go an even bigger
disappointment than their two previous aweful apps.

Just for starters: the app is incredibly slow; moving around in
the app requires you to flip around tediously; screen space is mostly
wasted; searching is hard; etc. And to make it almost pointless, it has
no charts.

Take a pass on this turkey.

If you are looking for a good aviation app, then check out Avare.
Pronounced “Av Air”. It downloads geo-referenced VFR, IFR Charts
Airport Diagrams and Approach Plates. Best of all it is free. Jeppesen
should be worried.

My favorite app is AviationMaps. Recently renamed to FlightPro
and then renamed to DroidEFB. The annual cost is less than I was
spending on paper charts that were always out of date. Plus it gives me
real-time inflight NEXRAD radar and METARS using my ADS-B receiver.

July Fly-out:

Our July Fly-out was actually a fly-in. Leading Edge Aviation
celebrated their 10th anniversary with free food, airplane rides, and an
open house. Congrats to LEA for all their success.
