Website: http://co-opa.com September 2013, Vol. 9, Issue 13 President's Message: We gave our Kudo's to Jay Bunning at the August Meeting. Jay managed to wake up residents in Deschutes River Woods late at night with a helicopter and actually got good press for doing so. Seems that Jay's student saw a fire, called it an, and alerted the sleeping folks to the danger. For more fantastic tales of daring do come at 6PM to KBDN Flight Services Building as usual on third Thursday of the month. Bring something for the potluck at 6:30pm and stay for the group meeting at 7pm. And please remember the meetings not done until everything is cleaner than we found it . The weather looks iffy for our September fly-out. 50% chance of rain Friday moving to 60% on Saturday with thunderstorms possible after 11am up to 11pm. Come Saturday the weather gods were kind with clear weather in the Willamette valley. After spinning the bottle we decided to head over to Independence (7S5) Airport. Ooops. Turns out that was the day for the annual RV convention. Maybe someone should NOTAM something like that? Busy, busy. To makes things worse, 7S5 changed CTAF from 122.8 to 122.975 last November. Half the pilots were on one frequency and half the other and most everyone was doing random pattern entries. I bugged out of the pattern when someone on the ground called out there was a low wing Piper just about to land on my high wing Cessna as I passed the approach numbers on downwind. Please pilots, with all the free online (Airnav.com) and App (Avare) flight data services there is no excuse for not having the correct CTAF! And broadcasting your position only helps when you listen, and think about, other peoples position reports. More about that elsewhere in this newsletter... Of course once we were on the ground, the airport cafe served us up a great breakfast and lots of fresh black coffee. The ramp was full of shiny RV's of all types so we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the ramp, and in the perfect flight back. My INBOX: Apropos the above story, this seminar notice just in from the FAA: "Uncontrolled Does Not Mean Out-of-Control: Non-Towered Airport Operations" Topic: Aircraft operations at non-towered airports and Runway Safety. This will be a 1 credit Wings course. It will be 6:30pm Wednesday 25 September at the KBDN Red Hanger, the repeated the next day in Prineville. I suspect this is partly in response to a large planned increase in fixed wing training traffic in Prineville (S39). Hillsboro Aviation is planning on sending 50 students to the field. In related news, I have heard center struggle with pilots with poor language skills asking for flight following. They try for a while, but rightly tell them to just go away after a while. I hope the flight schools resolve to work harder on language and communication skills. Newsletter Inputs: Send your newsletter tidbits to: gem@rellim.com
