Website: http://co-opa.com September 2015, Vol. 15, Issue 8 President's Message: Omigosh, some local trees are turning Fall colors and I just added our 2015 Holiday Party to our calendar. Last chance to plan some (end of) Summer flying and steel ourselves for Fall flying. Come join us at our September meeting to discuss flyhing and more. We meet in the KBDN Flight Services Building this Thursday, the Third Thursday, 17 September 2015, around 6pm. Pot luck at 6:30pm, and the usual 'formal' meeting at 7pm. In spite of the general cooling the weather forecast looks great for our Fly-out this Saturday. Calendar: 17 September – Monthly Meeting 19 September – Monthly Fly-out 15 October – Monthly Meeting 17 October – Monthly Fly-out 19 November – Monthly Meeting 21 November – Monthly Fly-out 17 December – Holiday Party! 19 December – Monthly Fly-out August Fly-out: There was smoke to the North, South, East and West for our Auguest fly-out. So to keep it simple our two intrepid CO-OPA planes (57R and 23Q) headed South-South-East toward Christmas Valley Airport (6S2). On the outbound leg there was a serious smoke layer between 6,500 and 7,500, but still acceptable VFR visibility. Just the thing to make an otherwise trivial trip into a bit of a challenge. While landing we noticed construction of a new taxiway on the north side of the runway and work on the parking ramp. The Oregon Department of Forestry intends to station two Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs) at 6S2 and so is investing in the new facilities there. It was a long, hot, walk to The Pines Cafe but the food, and air conditioning was worth the hike. A nice destination when the flying weather is iffy. On the trip back 23Q, with Mike and Ann Bond, took the direct route back, through the smoke. 57R with Gary Miller and Don Wilfong took the long way around Paulina to try to avoid some of the smoke. But that is not news, it happens all over the USA all summer, and we expect no less than awesome in Madras. What was news is that the Airshow did not happen on Saturday. Winds were 25 to 35, gusts to 40, but that was not the cause of the cancellation. Saturday morning around 10am a fire was started at Cove Palisades State Park, near Madras Airport, by improperly disposed of charcoal briquettes. The fast moving fire caused at least 100 people to flee, leaving behind their gear and trailers to be lost to the fire. As soon as the airshow management learned of the fire they sent their airshow fire and rescue teams to the fire evacuation zone. Two homes, and numerous out buildings, were totally destroyed. The next house to burn would have been Rob and Tricia Berg's new home. About 40 homes were saved by the quick reaction of the fire crews. An Erickson Skycrane that had been at the airshow was reported to have dumped impressive quantities of water on the fire from the adjacent lake for over 2 hours. The side effect of the fire was the airshow no longer had the FAA required fire crew. So the airshow had to be canceled. All involved in the airshow were deeply disappointed by the cancellation, but relieved that there was no loss of life and property loss was held to a minimum.
