Website http://co-opa.com September 2021, Vol. 21, Issue 9 President's Message: Time for our CO-OPA Monthly Meeting, on September 16th, the Third Thursday of the month. Be in the Bend Builders Assist hanger 63030 Powell Butte Road on the south west corner of KBDN, at 6pm, or be square. Bring your own dinner, and we’ll eat right away before food get cold. After we eat and chat there are always things for us to discuss. Once again, many thanks go out to Mike Robertson, and Mike Wissing, for letting us use their space. The Weather Underground forcast for Saturday, our Fly-out day, is for 90% chance for ½ inch of rain mid-day. Looking like another Fly-out breakfast at CJ’s at the Airport. The Sunday forecast to become nice by 10am. Weather.gov is a bit more pesimistic about Sunday. Maybe we can do decide Saturday to do something Sunday? Newsletter Inputs: Check out current and past CO-OPA newsletters, view our membership list and view hot aviation links on our website at: http://co-opa.com Please send comments and story ideas to: gem@rellim.com Fly-out (not): Our August Fly-out was similar to much of August. It did not happen. Uncertainty about smoke and an incoming weather system was too much. In the end, the low clouds won out over the smoke. So instead the Fly-out became a breakfast at CJ’s at the Airport. I’d have more to say about it, but due to an alarm clock malfunction, I missed it. Bend Airport Master Plan: August saw the 5th meeting of the Planning Advisory Commitee (PAC). The new plan is starting to be fleshed out. The Plan website is here: https://www.bendoregon.gov/government/departments/economic-development/bend-municipal-airport/airport-master-plan Or just google “Bend Airport Master Plan”. On the master plan page, click on “DRAFT Working Paper #2” to see 209 pages of the current plan. But no final drawings. As soon as the plan is accepted, the airport is recommended to start planning for an Aircraft Control Tower (ATCT), and to have it completed by 2025. The location will be east of the runway, exact location TBD. Also TBD is whether it will be a tradition ATCT or a “remote tower”. A remote tower involes putting up a lot of web cams, and putting the air traffic controller in a ground floor office on the airport. In the next few years (2022 or 2023) a roundabout will be added at the Powell Butte Highway and Butler Market intersection. Depending on funding, and a lot of negotiations, Powell Butte Highway will be relocated later to the north, and 1,060 feet will be added to the runway on the north end. In the very long term, and additional 1,400 would be added to the south end of the runway.
