Website: http://co-opa.com October 2014, Vol. 10, Issue 14 President's Message: Come joins us for our monthly meeting at 6pm in the KBDN Flight Services Building. Stick around for the potluck at 6:30pm and the short formal meeting at 7pm. This fly-out Saturday, October 18th, is the OPA Annual Meeting at the Lane College campus on the Eugene airport (EUG). Yes, there is a way to park your airplane on EUG without paying the $20 facility fee at Atlantic Aviation. Just park near the Fire Station on the north ramp. The weather forecast is for rain in EUG before 11am, but the programs start at 10am and go to 5:30. So driving is the best plan. Kitzhaber has proclaimed October 2014 to be Aviation Industry Appreciation Month. He cites that Oregon is home to over 400 aviation businesses, more than 76,000 aviation jobs and over $22.7 billion in aviation benefits. Not bad for an industry invisible to most Oregonians. Pass the word. You can see the full proclamation on page 3. Don Wilfong ruined everything by actually calling ahead and finding out the café had just closed, soon (but not soon enough for us) to open under new management. Plans, and directions, were quickly changed to instead head east. Burns Municipal (BNO) Airport was the new destination. Nary a bump on the way there, but a small bump in the FBO. Both crew cars were out. Taking pity on us the airport manager piled us all into his SUV and drove us into town. R J's in town was our destination. A wonderful meal, and plenty of coffee, was enjoyed by all. Except Maxwell tied up outside... Random Thoughts: Oregon is now home to three new drone testing sites. One in Pendleton that is testing now. Two more in Warm Springs and Tillamook that will be flying soon. The good news is that the FAA is insisting the drones only be flown by pilots with a Private Pilots Certificate and a 2nd Class Medical. Additionally the drone must be flown in sight of a designated spotter and any payload must be operated by a dedicated operator. To add to their burden, drones flown commercially must meet the same Type Certificate standards as manned aircraft. All this will change in the next few years as drones are integrated into the National Airspace System. Until then, check your NOTAMS!
